We support this spontaneous movement which challenges the noice and pollution of cars and mopeds on its own field. Take a look at it here.
Critical Mass is an international event which takes place in more than 400 cities around the world, each last Friday of each month, when cyclists, spontaneously and in massive way, go riding through the streets of their city, usually busy with cars.
Rome needs it a lot, while on the one hand in boast 150km of bycicle paths, most of it is out of the center and only a tiny percentage of Romans uses the bycicle as main transportation. On top of it the new administration of Romeis liberalizing access and parking to the center, therefore taking the wrong direction.
We appreciate your comments, feel free to ask info or tell us your point of view!Gughihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07490233138822762582noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2551816196509913639.post-88102850328404507292008-05-22T18:50:00.003+02:002008-05-23T12:33:07.798+02:00Rome and the NegawattThose of you acquainted with our website know how much we care about the environment. There is a big fuss nowadays about the 'Negawatt, in one word: the possibility of reducing by 30% world energy consumption by simple savings.
Rome from that perspective is faring ok. Cost of energy here is about double than elsewhere, as a consequence I've heard about utility managers here already decades ago. People are conscious about turning the lights off after they leave a room, if nothing else because it will cost them a fortune to behave differently!
Sure it would be nicer to see an ethical effort pointing in that direction, the Italian State isn't really taxing so much for idealistic reasons... After all it is here that the Club of Rome shook the world with their concerns expressed in the early 1970s with its reports The Limits to Growth (see Factor Four: Doubling Wealth, Halving Resource Use).. Also: what about the REM (Rome Energy Meetings)? And the latest 11th International Energy Forum (IEF)?
It may take some time before we get our 'negawatt' central here, yet on a scale we're not faring badly. Some steps have been taken on Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEV) and solar panels. I've heard saying it here in Rome actually: 'don't talk the talk, walk the walk!'
We, at Roman Reference are doing our bit, we are the first vacation rental website in Rome (in the world really) to have included an ecological footprint to the description of each of our apartments and we incentive clients to be consumption aware.
'Save yourself, save the world, save the energy!!' dixit.)Gughihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07490233138822762582noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2551816196509913639.post-66159290478756486482008-05-21T11:17:00.004+02:002008-05-21T11:48:11.218+02:00Future of RomeKind of an ambitious title I realize, yet those of us Romans who use(d) to be of left leaning we're all getting kinda philosophical here since 1- the extreme right -reinvented moderate, yet inspired by a fascist (!) glories (?) of the past- triumphed at the elections 2- so far they don't seem near as bad as expected (paradoxically though!).
But let me get back to track.
Future of cities like ours is mostly written in the megacenters of the South. To envision development Rome should stop looking at the developed world cities and compare to the best leapfrogging examples of the developed world. The new guy at the Capitol will get this concept by instinct (see point 2 above). Let's face it, we love Rome as it is (somehow), but a)we're not even near a developed first world city, b) go on like this a few more years and we're heading straight to collapse. We got to look straight in the face those cities that have gotten there (the collapse) a little earlier than us and use a tip or two.
Here is my tip made easy for the brand new major of Rome, in many ways still virgin to the power system that has reigned so far, so potentially more open.
Gianni please look at:
Bogotà for services
Goa for RURbanism
Mexico City for development
China for sun/biomassgassification/liftclub
See what you can do of it, I gotta finish packing my stuff and book.)Gughihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07490233138822762582noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2551816196509913639.post-34154674523172279052008-05-19T12:23:00.006+02:002008-06-27T16:56:11.497+02:00Roman Reference # 300 - Via Foscolo 10

COLISEUM - VIA FOSCOLO 10
Rome Lodging in between Santa Maria Maggiore church and San Giovanni in Laterano, 3 min. walk to the underground, 10 min walk to the Coliseum, 5min. to Colle Oppio parkland;
30sq.mts., studio in Rome center with loft set on the first floor it consists of:
LIVING ROOM AREA
living-room area with full fold out futon bed, armchair, wardrobe, bookshelves, TV/DVD, CD player, ceiling fan and window
LOFT
loft with double bed and reading light, access to the loft is gained climbing the steps you see in the pictures.
